Home Publishing 99

I have DIP9 and it says I can open a .php but since I've never really used
that program, I can't vouch for anything about that program or the later
versions.

My wife has been using Home Publishing 99 for her Garden Club. It looks like
the software (Disk2 and Disk3) is corrupted and I have been unable to find
another copy of Home Publishing 99 to replace the software.

Does anyone know where I can purchase a copy of Home Publishing 99?

I have ordered trial version CD of Publisher 2003 as a possible replacement.
Does anyone know if the newsletters created in HP99 are compatible with
Publisher 2003?

I would suggest that you try to clean the disks
using warm water and mild soap...rinse well and
dry with a soft cloth wiping from center to edge...
not in circles. Then make copies of the disks and
use the copies.

If you explore disk one...there may be instructions
on installing the complete program to the hard
drive and then you won't have to insert a disk
everytime you create a project.

HP (Home Publishing) 99 and MS Publisher
are two very different programs. The current
MS program that would be most like Home
Publishing 99 would be Digital Image 2006.

Here's a link to the current versions:

MS Digital Image 2006 Suite

There is a trial version of Digital Image 2006
available for download but it does not include
all the artwork and projects that the full version
contains.

As for replacing HP99...your best bet would
be to try eBay...it's usually a good source for
outdated software. And BTW...if you upgrade
your computer to Windows XP...HP99 will
not run on it. Home Publishing 2000 might
be a better choice.

One last thought...if you are running HP99 that
means you are not running Windows XP and
Publisher 2003 (the CD you ordered) only runs
on Microsoft Windows 2000 with Service Pack 3
(SP3), Windows XP, or later

Thanks a million for your quick response. I have been running HP99 on a
Dell Dimension 4300 with Windows XP for the past year. This is the first
time we have run into any compatibility issues. I tried to load on my Dell
Laptop 5100 but get message that Artgal50.mmc is corrupted. I cannot locate
the corrupted file and repeated reinstalls has not corrected the problem.
Based on your suggestion, I am going to download the Digital Image 2006 trial
version and see if it is compatible with the newsletters my wife created in
HP99. If she can use DI2006 with her old files I will upgrade.

Thanks again for your help and input.

That's interesting because I've seen so
many messages from HP99 users who
could not run the program. The following
KB Article addresses the issue. I would
be interested to know how you manage
to run the program. Are you positive that
you are running HP99 and not HP2000?

Something is Missing." Error Message When
You Try to Start Home Publishing or Greetings

The .php files from HP99 should open successfully
in DIS2006....and BTW...they will *NOT* open
in MS Publisher 2003.

Artgal50.mmc is your Home Publishing user
database...if you search for and rename or delete it...
the program will create a fresh copy. And correct...
a reinstall would not affect the Artgal50.mmc file.
The following article...though focused on PI2000,
is still pertinent to HP99:

(250546) PI2000 Err Msg: An Error Occurred
in Starting the Catalog
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=250546

If you cannot find Artgal50.mmc try searching
for hidden files. You may need to open a
folder and go to...Tools / Folder Options /
View tab...and tick...
"Show Hidden Files and Folders".

Here's the path:

C:\Documents and Settings\>user name<\
Application Data\Microsoft\Media Catalog/
Artgal50.mmc

It works. You have to save in the .png-plus format
but the .php files will open successfully.

BTW, I have Home Publishing 2000 and seven versions
of Picture It!/Digital Image installed so it's easy enough
to run tests when necessary.

Thanks for your help and advice. Home Publishing 99 is running ok on my
Dell Dimension with Windows XP with all the current updates. I am unable to
install and run the same Home Publishing 99 on my Dell Laptop with the same
Windows XP. I can open newsletters on the laptop but when I try to add clip
art, I get the message Artgal50.mmc corrupted. Found in directory (acutally
there was no file on the laptop in the Media folder. I tried reinstall with
no luck, then copied the Artgal50.mmc file from the desktop to the laptop
Media Catologue folder. Same results that file was corrupted.

Finally gave up trying to install HP99 on the laptop. I did find I had
Microsoft Publisher installed on both my desktop and laptop. I assume it was
preloaded by Dell as part of the Home Office suite and I had never realized
it was on the system. It looks like a good software package to do what we
need, but I don't see any way to convert the newsletter.php files created by
Home Publishing 99 to a file readable by Microsoft Publisher2002 which is
installed on both my systems. Any advice would be appreciated.

I am also confused about your recommendation to use Microsoft Digital Image
2006 as a replacement for the HP99. From the specs I read on DI2006, it only
handles digital photos. I have Microsoft Picture It! Digital Image Pro which
appears to do exactly the same functions as DI2006 you recommended.

Thanks again for helping educate me in on the publishing world.

All I can say is you are the only user I have
heard from that can run HP99 on Windows XP.
I'm wondering if XP was an upgrade install over
a previous operating system?

As expected...the program is not compatible
with WinXP and your success with it on your
wife's computer is extremely untypical.

If you can use MS Publisher for your projects
that's great but the learning curve is much steeper
than Home Publishing or Digital Image.

I already told you that HP99 .php files are *not*
compatible with Microsoft Publisher.

==============================
Home Publishing / Picture It! were at one time
companion programs...then in 2001...Picture It!
Publishing was released. This was a combination
of the two. Since that time...all Picture It! / Digital
Image versions have the capabilities to create
all sorts of projects.

You fail to share your version of Digital Image Pro
but all versions including Digital Image Suite 2006
are compatible with .php files. And you are correct...
your version of Digital Image Pro is an earlier version
of the software I recommended.

Just wondering why you have all these programs
with no clue what they are for?

Maybe you could try it? Digital Image Pro has
the capability to create greeting cards, brochures,
business cards...all types of projects just like
Home Publishing.

Thanks again for helping educate me in on the publishing
world.

You're welcome but I'm beginning to think
we are getting nowhere.
