Hotmail Failure!!!

Hi Guys,

I am just wondering why I can¹t receive any emails of my hotmail account in
MS Entourage? I have been using Entourage to check for my hotmail email
since 2001.

I am using Office 2004 v11.0.0.

Error message I receive:
Connection to the server failed or was dropped.

Explanation
The Hotmail folder list could not be received.

I¹ve had check my settings and as always they are correct.

Any help would be great!

Hotmail Failure!!!If you have recently been experiencing problems I believe it may be with the server. I have recently been experiencing problems myself that sometimes I can access my Hotmail account then other times I get error messages but keep trying and eventually make the connection.

Microsoft's Knowledgebase article 327041 states:

A recent change to MSN Hotmail means users with a standard free Hotmail
account are no longer able to use the POP Mail Retrieval feature. This means
users of free Hotmail are not able to combine e-mail from other accounts
into a single Hotmail account. However, MSN Extra Storage subscribers and
MSN Internet Access subscribers with Web-based e-mail can continue to
aggregate e-mail from other accounts into a single Hotmail account.

This may have something to do with the problem you described.

That's not fair now. With Gmail I can access the email with entourage and
that's not a Microsoft software how funny is that. I may use Gmail from now
on. It has been great with hotmail since I started with them way back in 22
Dec 1998. Never mind.

Entourage uses Distributed Authoring and Versioning (DAV). Here is a more
relevant article:

MSN Hotmail no longer supports Distributed Authoring and Versioning (DAV)
for free user accounts. Outlook Express uses the DAV interface to connect to
Hotmail. Only paid Hotmail accounts will work correctly with Outlook
Express. If you configured Outlook Express or Outlook to access your Hotmail
account before DAV support was ended, you may still be able to use Outlook
Express to open a free Hotmail account. However, eventually Hotmail will no
longer support DAV for all free Hotmail accounts.

The key term here being "Eventually". I'm not sure how or when this will
happen. I do know that I can access my free hotmail account with Entourage
today. I don't know how much longer that will be the case.

If everything else is configured correctly, then this may be the issue.

work again with Entourage? Right!

On what part of the Microsoft page can I find out how much it will cost to
get access through Entourage? Australian dollars.

I definitely remember seeing announcements that POP access for free accounts
would be phased out around April 2005. However, I assume it's a question of
gradually switching over accounts and servers, so who knows how it will
actually go. There's no guarantee this is really your problem right now.

POP access will be part of the feature set for a paid account--don't they
send you ads for it every so often? I think it's around $20US here.

You might want to search the entourage group for more information.

At least one person there was having mysterious difficulties that cleared up
with a paid account.

Yes. But remember that other email providers, like gmail, offer the same
functionality for free. Why pay for hotmail?

Here's another. Microsoft promised 250MB disk space with free Hotmail
accounts, when Google launched gmail (beta).

Now, on Hotmail login, Microsoft Corporation writes:

250MB inbox available only in the 50 United States, District of
Columbia, and Puerto Rico. Eligible Hotmail users will first receive
25MB at sign-up. Please allow at least 30 days for activation of your
250MB storage to verify your e-mail account and help prevent abuse.
Microsoft Corporation reserves the right to provide 250MB inbox to free
Hotmail accounts at its discretion.

I have gone with Gmail now and its much better with Entourage non of this

Download and install the latest Office 2004 update, which is Office 2004
Service Pack 1. Service Pack 1 includes a number of fixes that are
documented in this article on the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

In Office 2004, use Microsoft AutoUpdate to get the latest updates. From
any Office application, go to Help > Check for Updates (or manually launch
Microsoft AutoUpdate from the Applications folder). If any updates are
needed, they will display in a sheet, at which point you can check them and
press the "Install" button to download and install them.
