Hi Rich,

Create your movie files in a format that is compatible with your intended
audience (.wmv or .avi, for example).
Import them into your web site.
Create links to the files.

Thank Kevin, do I need to compress the video or use
streaming video to speed up loading for the viewer?

Rich:

At our church, we:

1. Record to digital video
2. Import to computer using Windows Media Encoder (which encodes on import)
3. Upload to server and link to files

We use a streaming format for multiple bandwidth. Most of this is done by
default in Windows Media Encoder. Our server is using Windows Media Services
9. Plenty of overhead for us and no problems thus far.

That's good advice, Rich. And I might add that Windows Media Encoder is a
free download from the Microsoft web site.

Thanks Rich, I tried that with the folowing results does
this sound right?

Encoded a 12 minute sermon audio and video from analog
vcr tape with WME as streaming format, 15.8 mege bites.
It took me 17 minutes to upload to the server using DSL.
I tested the link to it from my web page and let it load
for about 90 seconds then clicked the play button and it
played OK.

How do you set up WME for the best/fastest results?

What server are you loading the video to? Are you streaming using Windows
Media Services from Windows 2000 or Windows 2003 with all service packs or
are you playing via http? You can play a Windows Media encoded file through
http, but it works best if you play it from Windows Media Services on your
Windows Server.

Rich you are going over my head, sorry to be so stupid
but as I said I am totaly new to the world of video on
web sites. I'll try and explane what I have done so far.
I Encoded a 12 minute sermon from analog tape on a vcr.
Then I placed the resulting file in my web site and
uploaded it to the server. I link to the file and it
plays in the windows medial player that pops up.

If you wish, you may check it out at
Http://www.fumcwl.org scroll down the bottom frame and
click on the single X on the lower left. No sound, just
video.

Your question: Are you streaming using Windows
Media Services from Windows 2000 or Windows 2003 with all
service packs... I beleive the answer is no. How do I use
this feature, or is it something the server has to have
installed?

In the most simple terms, in order to "stream" video from a web server over
the internet, you need to use a service that can parse out bits of the video
at a time while the player plays it. That is called "streaming".

There is a server component required to do this that must be loaded on your
server. Depending upon the format (Real, Windows Media), there will be a
specific application that will need to be installed on your server.

If you are going to use Windows Media encoding, you need to load Windows
Media Services on your server. To get more info on this, click the link

Our server is a computer located in our church. I access
it from my home. I checked the MS site you suggested but
where is the program I should download and place on our
server? I down loaded Microsoft® Windows Media® 9 Series
is this the one?

Windows Media Services is part of Windows 2003 Server. I don't know if you
can download it separately. There might be an older version which may now be
free (I have no idea). The main page for this app is at:

Kevin:

He already has the video encoded. He is streaming it via http and wanted to
know how to stream it via Windows Media Services.

Hi Rich,

I mentioned Windows Media Encoder because it can run on a non-server OS.

Rich, thanks for all your help and puting up with my
questions. I think trying to put a 15-20 minute video on
line is not possible for me at tis time. If you have done
this please give me the address of the site it is on, I'd
like to see how it works. Is ther any other way such
as "real PLayer to do this?

At this time, I'm only streaming audio clips for a band website (30 second
clips), but the principle is the same. It can be 30 seconds or 30 minutes.
The way Windows Media and Real streaming technologies work is that it plays
the downloaded part of the file while it downloads the next section for
play, producing continuous play. Real Player does it the same way.

The server application controls the streaming to the client side (player).
If you want to see lengthy video, you can see this on the www.harvest.org
site or www.calvarychapel.org/costamesa
