How can I determine who did the work on a document?

In teaching Microsoft Office, we (unfortunately) have students that will
'share' work. I used to use the properties to check ownership. However,
students now know that that can be easily changed. Is there any 'hidden'
setting, that students cannot change, that tracks the system that was used to
create or edit a document?

The document may still contain an author list but newer versions of
Word have an option that will remove all personal information when the
document is saved. Personally Identifiable Information (PII) is
something Microsoft has taken strides to prevent.

Plus all one has to do is copy/paste the contents into a new document.

So you could potentially expose a few students, depending on the
version of Word they are using, but the smarter ones would get away
with it. There really isn't any foolproof way of determining something
like this.

If a single work is submitted by multiple students simply divide the
points for a single assignment among the partcipants. When each receive
1/2, or 1/4 credit for the assignment the originator will "guard their
work more closely" in the future.
