How can I get saved word documents to open?

I know it would probably help to uninstall and then re-install word-it's part
of the works suite 2000 but I have lost the relevant discs. Everytime I
attempt to open any saved word documents they just freeze on the start up
screen. Sometimes an error message comes up saying not enough memory space
but sometimes it doesn't.

Actually, it probably wouldn't help to reinstall. This rarely touches the
parts that are causing the problems. See Garfield's reply.
