How Can I save Archive copies on the E drive?

Phillip

Can someone PLEASE tell me how to save docs on my E drive on a CD-RW and then later be able to access them , make changes and save them? I keep getting the message that they are "Read-Only". I can not check the "archive" box because it is "greyed out." I am perplexed. Why is so difficult to find an answer to this? I have tried every Help menu but no answer. Please help...before I go crazy...I've spent 5 hours on this and am at my wits end.

All files on a CD are read-only (not just Word documents). You need to
transfer the file to your hard disk, then use Windows Explorer to clear the
read-only flag.

NEVER write documents directly from Word to a CD. a) you're likely to get a
corrupt document, and b) you'll fill the CD with multiple copies of the Word
temp file.

Bless You Jezebel... I tried your answer to my question . Thanks, it worked.
(Ironically the answer came from "Jezebel"! My favorite character in Bob Dylan's "Tombtone Blues"... Jezebel the Nun.
Anyway... thanks a lot. It really has helped.

Do I always have to save it to the C drive and then back to the E drive (CD) ?
In other words, doing as you first suggested and then saving and closing the doc on the CD.
Later when I open that doc on the CD... make changes...how then do I save the doc? On the C drive and then save back to the CD ? Or in that case can I save directly to the CD" Remember what I want is a doc on a CD saved as an archive
Someday I'll get the hang of this

Phillip, the simplest way for you is this.
Use a blank CD, not CD-R/W, as they're dirt cheap anyway.
When finished with your Word Docs., save them to the Desktop.
Then burn those saved ones to CD.
If you want to retrieve any later to modify them, copy them from the CD to
your Desktop, go to Properties on the file & uncheck the read-Only box.
If you want to do several at once, highlight the lot, go to Properties on
any highlighted file & uncheck the read-Only box. That will remove it from
all the files in one hit.

After modifying the Word Docs., reburn them to the CD - rename them if you
wish to distinguish them from the originals, or just work on the 'Modified
date' to see which is the newer version.
When the CD is eventually full (which will take yonks with just Word Docs.),
just copy the ones you want to keep from the CD to Desktop & burn them to a
new CD.

*Always* open and save to and from the hard drive. Do not use removable
media for this, such as CDR or especially floppy.
Keep copies on removable media that you have copied to it using Windows
Explorer.

Word creates a host of temporary files in the working folder. It is these
that cause the problems.
