How Can I total up/add a column?

I have lost my manual, and can not figure out how to add a column. Is there a
simple explanation as to how to accomplish this.

I assume you mean sum a custom field? Select Tools, Customize, Fields and
select rollup and sum. For calculated fields the Summary tasks should
already be summing them.
