How do I attach a line to the end of task bar to meet with a deadl

T

Tracey S

I have entered a task and have a bar on my gantt chart, I have a deadline
arrow further along the same task line and I need to draw a line (in green)
to connect the two together. I can do this OK, but when the project is
printed the lines are not in the correct place.

I have tried drawing and attach to task with right hand attachment point but
the line does not appear in the correct place and when I try to move it, it
also prints in the wrong place.

Any ideas would be very much appreciated.

Hi Tracey,

Welcome to this Microsoft Project newsgroup :)

You might be out of luck here :( Printing of drawings has always been a
flakey and imprecise procedure. You just have to adjust the line in the
Gantt Chart view until is meets the printing requirements via Print Preview.
Having said that, many printing problems are caused by out of date printer
drivers - please see FAQ Item: 44. Printing Problems

FAQs, companion products and other useful Project information can be seen at

Hope this helps - please let us know how you get on:)

Hi Tracey S.,

There may be a work-around for you which avoids the problem of drawing
on the Gantt chart view. As Mike noted, drawing objects in Project have
always been a bit flakey.

I was able to accomplish what I think you are trying to do with a
combination of Flag fields and formatting the Gantt chart.

I inserted a flag field (Flag1) and then customized the field with the
following formula:

IIf(Deadline<>ProjDatevalue("NA"),Yes,No)

This will show Yes in the Flag1 field for tasks with a deadline and will
show No for tasks without a deadline.

Then I customized the Gantt Chart (Format > Bar Styles) and added the
following line definition:

Name: Deadline Line
Appearance: Thin green line
Show For ... Tasks: Flag1
Row: 1
From: Finish
To: Deadline

This now adds the green line following the Gantt bar which connects the
scheduled finish of the task to the Deadline date.

You may find this a bit more predictable then attempting to draw on the
Gantt Chart.

I hope this helps. Let us know how you get along.

Thanks for the responses. Having spent a number of hours over the last 2
days trying to figure it out, I eventually got to the same work around as
Julie. Add another Bar Style to the Gantt Chart, using thin line at the top
of row, and finish to deadline columns/date. It looks really good on my
project and consistent when printing. Success!
