How do i change a doc to read only

Hi,
I am trying to change the document to a read only file so that it can not be
changed whenIi send it to a person. But it does not allow me to change the
file to a read only file. Is there a nother way I can protect the file that
it can not be changed by the recipient.

Send it as a .pdf. But even that can be changed with the appropriate
software. Nothing electronic is completely uneditable.
