How do I convert word 2000 files to word 2003 files

Every time I try to copy a document from the old word 2000 and open it in
the new word programe. It opens in a formate I can not read. I tried to
convert it but with my low knolage of this matter, I am scard I will mess up
my new program. Can some one tell me how to do this. Is it the I need to copy
it or something I need to download. Please help. Thank you
