How do I deactivate the product code?

M

I loaded Publisher onto my laptop, and I've now changed my mind and want to
have this on my desktop instead. How do I deactivate the product code on the
laptop so that I can activate it on my desktop?

M

Mike Hall

If it is a retail version, you uninstall from your laptop, and install onto
your desktop..

Did your copy of Publisher come with your laptop or did you purchase it at
your local software retailer?

M

It came with my laptop. I bought both a laptop and a desktop last week from
Dell. I was planning on using it on my laptop, but I decided after I
installed it that I wanted it on my desktop instead. I've uninstalled my
copy on the laptop, but now I'm getting a message after re-installing on my
desktop that I've already activated the software.

That's right. Because it came with the laptop, it is only licensed to that
computer. That's why OEM software is cheaper. When that computer dies, so
does the software license.

To be able to use it on other computers, you need to buy a retail version.

It could still be OEM, and has already been activated on another computer
anyway..

JoAnn,

Does it state anywhere when you buy OEM software with a computer it has to
be installed in that computer? Or, is it an assumption?

In midge's case it sounds like the software wasn't installed in the
computer but in the same box the computer came in.

I'm assuming the CD is an OEM and sold by a computer outlet. I thought the

From http://www.cpearson.com/excel/EULAFAQ.htm:

Q: I have an OEM Copy of Office and installed it on my PC. Can I
install it on my laptop, too?

A: No. The EULA is different for OEM copies of Office, and you cannot
install an OEM Copy on your laptop, only if you are the only user of the
laptop. The OEM copy of Office can exist only on the original PC on
which it was installed. No laptops, no anything else. OEM copies are
strictly one machine only licenses.

If it wasn't already installed on the new laptop and it was a separate CD, I
think then it coulda been installed on the desktop (how would it know it
wasn't installed on the machine it was purchase with anyway - in this case)

Try reinstalling it on your laptop. I think it will recognize your
laptop...or your laptop will remember it. Something like that.

No you _should_ be able to reinstall it on the laptop, that's the machine

Yes, it *will* be considered activated. You need to select the telephone
