How do I decode a document?

I am getting ready to reformat my computer. I copied some word and excel
documents to CDs and tried to put them back on my computer to make sure it
worked. When I opened the documents from the CD and the original from my
computer, they were encoded. The default encoder didn't solve the problem
nor did other encoders. I want to be able to read my files again.
