How do I get Microsoft Office XP NOT to change date when opening .

I need my documents to retain the original dates; however, when I open an
existing document the date is automatically updated to the current date. Is
this a feature I can "turn off", and, if so, how do I do that?

I have searched through the various tools options and cannot figure out how
to fix this problem. It apparently has something to do with an update, as it
seems documents prior to mid-September retain the old date, but anything
since then updates.
