How do I get Project to calculate duration correctly btn 2+ resour

I have two resources working on independent tasks which both start at the
same time. Task one will end approximately 14 weeks prior to task two - at
which point my second resource will roll over to the first task to help
complete the task and reduce the duration. When I add the second resource to
the first task - it reduced the duration of the entire task by half - when in
reality - only the duration of the remaining weeks, when both individuals are
working together, should impact the duration of the entire task. How do I get
Project to calculate this correctly?

First, I think there is an error in your scenario description. If task
one ends before task two I don't think either resource will be rolling
over to work on task one - it will be done first.

There are probably various ways to set this up. Here is the method I
used and it seemed to give what you want. I assume that you want the
tasks to be Fixed Work type. I also assume you mean that Joe is assigned
to task one and Joe and Fred are assigned to task two - Joe joining Fred
when he gets done with task one.
1. Set up the tasks with the desired Duration
2. Enter the effort in the Work field
3. Assign Joe to task one at 100% and Joe and Fred to task two at 100%
4. Set the Priority of task one so it is higher than task two
5. Go to Tools/Level Resources and level day by day

With the leveling step you should see the Duration of task two get
reduced when Joe rolls over to help Fred.
