How do I make a word documnet read only?

O

OM

I've been sent word documents previously that I have not been able to
edit and save or even select the text from!

How can I do this?
This is a better alternative to creating PDF's in my opinion.

Thanks.

If you're using 2003, you have a few options. You can click Tools >
Protect Document and choose Read Only, allow only some changes or set
to Forms and then only form fields are editable. If there are not form
fields...then you cannot edit it. Also check under Tools > Options >
Security for Read Only setting. Remember to add a password and DON'T
forget it.

In previous versions the protect doc did not include Read Only options
like this.

More than likely they used Tools/Protect Document and protected the
document for Forms.

However note this is not intended to be used for document security -
it's for working in a collaborative environment. All one has to do is
create a new document, go to Insert/File, insert the contents of the
protected document and document protection will be stripped.
