How do I prevent people from copying a logo from a web site?

Normally, when visiting web sites, if you right click on a graphic, you will see a menu that includes "copy." I have seen sites where, when right clicking on a graphic, the menu items do not come up, but a message comes up stating something like the option is unavailable. How would I do this in Microsoft FrontPage 2003?

Don't bother. Every little trick has an easy work-around.

ClintonG is right, there is no foolproof way to pull this
off. But this script disables the right click function
and may stop some novices anyway. Just paste this into
the HTML of your page.

<body onLoad="imageTrap()">
<script language="JavaScript">
function imageProtect() {
msg = "Downloading Image Not Allowed! ";

setTimeout( "alert( msg )", 0 );
return false;
}

function imageTrap() {
if( document.images ) {
for( i=0; i<document.images.length; i++ ) {
document.images.onmousedown =
imageProtect;
}
}
}
</script>

Norma,

If someone really wants your images, they can save the
page anyway.

What you could do is place a transparent gif over your
image. That way when they copy, they get the transparent
gif.

If it will give you peace of mind, here is a script you
can use ...

I dabble a little in photoshop doing things like making logos and I like to
post them to my website for show. Unless it is directly related to my own
site I just put up a plain graphic. If I don't want anyone to have it so
easily I will just 'watermark' the image. There are probably ways people
could get around it...kinda like chaining up a bike...they can take your
bike but they'll have to leave a tire...ya know???

Thank you all for your help. My main purpose in doing this is to prevent most people from using our logo. We are a group of sewing professionals -- The Professional Association of Custom Clothiers. We do provide our logo to our "formal" members on request. However, I just don't want to make it that easy to just take it off of our site! I do know that if people really want to do something, they will find a way to do it, but I don't want to leave the barn door open, just because you can get in the barn anyway!

Norma,

That's a hard problem to resolve. You can place a same-size transparent
image over the image so that when people copy it, they get the transparent
image instead.
