How do I remove 'my places' bar?

When I go 'open' from a word document I have a list of shortcut items on lh
side, and in the bar at the top a question mark next to the closing cross.
How do I remove 'my places' bar? I like to see minimise/maximise next to the
closing cross.

I don't think the My Places bar is removable. I don't know what version
of Word you have, but double-clicking on the blue bar at the top
maximizes/minimizes my Open dialog box.

You cannot remove the Places Bar. And there have never been
Minimize/Maximize buttons on any Word dialog. As Tonya says, in recent
versions of Word, you can Maximize and Restore (but not Minimize) by
double-clicking on the title bar. You can also enlarge the dialog by
dragging on any of the sides.

Create or edit the following registry value (a dword):
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersio
n\Policies\comdlg32\NoPlacesBar
Set to 1 to hide the places bar, 0 (zero) to show. This
affects all Windows and Office applications.
