How do I set up a document to include an index?

I imported a genealogical program into Word and have made changes and
additions to it since then. The imported version apparently had coded names
to be included in an index. Since then I noticed that names I have added to
the book are not indexed, and I have sought them out and marked them with xe.
But, I am planning to write another book without the genealogical program and
would love to be able to have an automatic code for index entries. I always
suspected it was the type face and size that triggerd it. Can it be done?
