How do I speed up opening Word 2003 and files?

I have recently upgraded from Word 2000, that came with Works, to Word 2003.
The speed is very slow to open Word and files. Everything else on my computer
is very fast including opening 'My Documents.' I am running XP with increased
memory up to 384. Word 2000 was fast.
