How do I stop buttons in toolbar from disaparing in Office XP? W.

I use Office XP. Lately, when I am in Outlook, buttons in the toolbar are
starting to disapear. I can go into custom and restore them, but I do not
understand how or why this is happening. How do I stop this from happening.
