how do I turn off the automatic field codes in word?

field code problem

Hi,
I happened to click on field codes one day and now they won't stop coming up
when I open a new doc. I guess the default changed??

I can change to the result of the field code with shift F9 but I don't want
them to appear-I just want results!!!!!!

Please make a suggestion as to how to change the default back.

Skinny,

Shift + F9 will only toggle the fields that are currently selected. Alt +
F9 will toggle all field codes. Alternatively, you can go to
Tools>Options>View and uncheck "Field Codes".
