How do you select floating pictures in Word?

I frequently receive documents from other users with embedded pictures
(bitmaps and vectors) that I can't select. In Print Layout mode I can't even
see them. They only show up when I print (or print preview) or view the
document in "Reading Pane" view. But even when I can see them, I still can't
select them.

It might be that they are anchored to the header or footer, in which case
you can select them only when headers and footers are active.

We've seen several reports (and examples) of such issues. In one case the
picture (a giant ladybug) was defined in the document XML. In another, it
was a graph inserted in a table cell with exact row height and line height;
the field code could be seen when fields were toggled, but the graph didn't
appear until the page was printed. Generally speaking, all these problems
pretty much come under the heading of document corruption; you might try the
troubleshooting techniques at
