How Microsoft Calculates the % assigned for a resource on a task

Dale

I have assigned resources to tasks and see where Microsoft calculates the %
for that resource on that task based on the combination of the work and
duration. Then as actual work is completed the % changes. I have one
resource (a crew) who's base availablity is 528%. I have a task that is
estimated to take 140 man hours of work over a duration of 4 days. The
initial calculation Microsoft made on this assignement was 438%. Then after
two days of reporting actual work of 36 man hours the first day and 40 man
hours the second day (leaving an estimated 64 man hours to complete the task)
Microsoft recalculated the assignment percentage to 500%. I can replicate
the initial calculation of 438% as 140 man hours divided by 32 man hours (4
days at 8 hours per day) but I cannot replicate the 500%. How is this
calculation made?

Hello Dale,
<<reporting actual work of 36 man hours the first day and 40 man hours the
second day>>
The effort of your resource is not the same each day. In this case, Project
displays the Maximum units used on any day.

Hi Dale,

The first day where you recorded 36 hours of actual work completed in 8
hours duration, project calculated:

36 hrs work/8 hour duration = 4.5 or 450%
The second day, where you recorded 40 hours of actual work completed in 8
hours duration, project calculated:

40 hours work/8 hour duration = 5 or 500%

If you display the task usage view and add the Peak Units field to the time
phased (right side) of the view, you'll see the 450% for day 1 and 500% for
day two. On the Gantt chart it just shows the 500% assignment unit.

Hope this helps. Let us know how you get along.

Julie
