How to create a click button that open excel file?

I need to create a button on a page that the user clicks on and download a
excel file (****.xls) to client and open it with excel. Can anybody give me
good advice to resolve this problem?

Excel (or other MS Office) files will open in the users browser window if the user has Excel (or the other MS O program) installed
- make the Excel file a zip file to force a download
