How to create a task to show (say) 2d work done over 10d fixed period (without using resource units)

Hi,
What I want to see in my project plan is a task bar that reflects the
following type of statement: This task represents 2 days work, done over
a fixed 10 day period.

ie, I want to define a task bar of 10days fixed duration but where the
amount of work done over that 10 days is only in fact 2 days work (ie
the work would be spread evenly or unevenly over the 10 days, but the
work would be done by the end of the 10 days).

Now, I know I can assign a resource and then use the UNITS for that
resource to do this, BUT that gets really ugly when, say, you have an
example like a fixed duration of 31 days, in which 1.5 days work must be
done. I simply want to input those 2 numbers somewhere (31 and 1.5), I
don't want to have to calculate and use trial-and-error to figure out
the units value that would give me the equivalent answer.

Is that possible?

Thanks, Andrew Beale

Hello Andrew,

Create the 10day task. Choose Window >Split to divide your screen
into two panes and show the task form in the lower pane. Set the
task as "Fixed Duration" in the task form, click on OK. Click under
the "Resource Name" select you resource. Enter the 2 days work in
the work column. Click OK and Project will calculate the assignment
units needed for the resource to work on the task for 10 days and
produce 16 hours of work.

I hope this helps. Let us know how you get along.

Thanks to both of you, that suggestion worked just fine.

Originally I was hoping to be able to do that without having any
resource assigned (that is, I'm creating a kind of template plan), but
it's no hassle having to have a resource to do this.

Regards,
Andrew

You're welcome Andrew. Glad to have helped and thanks for the
feedback. You can create resources with "generic" names and assign
them to your tasks to create the template. Then as you develop the
plan further, replace the generic names in the resource sheet with
the true names.
