How to delete a character or word in a document.

In WordPerfect, you can highlight a character or word, hit delete key and it
is gone. What about Word in Office 2003?

Yep. Works that way in Word, too... unless you have either of the
WordPerfect options enabled in Tools - Options - General, in which case
it'll prompt Delete block Y/N? on the status bar.
