How to print semi-transparent color blocks in Publisher 2002?

I have color blocks in my publication that are printing as either a messy
pattern or are solid instead of semi-transparent as they are on the computer.
Why is this happening?

Transparency is iffy with Publisher, the printing will be as you say "messy" or
banded. A workaround is to copy the color blocks, paste special as a .png or
..gif.
