how to reset word global template (normal)?

every time i open a new blank page in Word there is no margin at all on the
top or bottom of the page. i cant click and drag the margin to make it
appear and i when i go to 'page setup' it says i have a 1" margin for both!
this is driving me crazy. am i right in assuming that somehow i've changed
the global template? if so or not - HOW DO I FIX THIS???!!! i've been
messing with this for 3 hours and gotten nowhere!

In Tools > Options > View, check the box for "White space between
pages".

Alternatively, when you hover the mouse over the top or bottom of the
page, notice that the cursor changes to a pair of boxes containing
arrows. Click there to toggle between showing and not showing the
margins, headers and footers.
