Hyperlink to excel file

I'm in the process of designing my first web page, so I may some very simple
instructions.
I'm trying to create a hyperlink to an excel file. but I don't seem to be
able to view the link when I use the preview your web page button. I've tried
to save the file as an excel file as well as a web page, yet I still cannot
view the page (does get highlighted). Although while working within Publisher
I can hover over the link and press "CTRL & click" and the file does come up
(after a couple of security clicks ie, are you sure you want to view this
file). What am I doing wrong?

Thanks David,
As I said this is my first webpage and the first time I'm using Publisher,
so please be patient.
I've followed the instructions (saved the excel as a webpage then created a
hyperlink to that doc {.htm file}) but nothing happens when I hover over the
highlighted area (a pointer finger does appear, but nothing happens when I
click)during "view as a webpage"? I have no problem creating hyperlinks to
email addresses and webpages I've viewed on the internet, but when I try to
view my .htm file nothing happens? What am I not doing?

I am not sure what you are trying to do. If you want to make your Excel file
available to download as an excel file, then you need to zip the file,
upload it to your website, and write your link to where you put the file.
Then when the user clicks on the link they will download and save it to
disk...not open it in the browser. Go back and read the article again.

If you are trying to link to a chart from Excel, then just copy the chart
and paste it into your Publisher document as an image.

I am not sure why you would want to convert your Excel file to a .htm
file...you can copy any part of the spreadsheet and using paste special,
paste it into your Pub doc as a table, picture...in a variety of ways.

If after reading the article again, and considering my suggestions, perhaps
you can explain more fully what you are trying to do. I'm patient...just
confused by your question and what you are trying to do.
