I am trying to merge several presentations into one.

I am trying to put several slideshows together to make one huge one. Student
work. Anyway how do I keep the individual slide backgrounds, transitions,
etc. in place.

Newer versions of PowerPoint have a "Keep source formatting" checkbox at the
bottom left hand side of the dialog box that comes up when you click
"Insert", "Slides from files". If you check that, when you import slides,
they will keep their formatting, not take on the formatting of the
presentation you are bringing it into.
