Backgrounds are for Web pages. If you want a background that prints, you
need to use a watermark. In Word 2002 or 2003, use Format | Background |
Printed Watermark. For earlier versions, see “HOW TO: Create a Watermark in
Word 97 and in Microsoft Word 2000†at
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=211324

In Word 2003 only, you *can* print a "background" by checking the
appropriate box on the Print tab of Tools | Options. For previous versions,
you must save the document as a Web page and print it from your browser,
after enabling the Internet Options setting to print background colors and
images.

Hi J.B.,

To add one rather convoluted approach to Suzanne's :)
so that the Word document gains your background and
doesn't print with the limitations of Internet Explorer,
you can use this technique.

1. To make things simpler create a new blank document
with just the background added (this step is optional).

2. Use File=>Web Page Preview to see the page in
Internet Explorer.

3. In your browser, go to the 'Address Bar' and from
the right hand side delete the part of the name that
is your file (for example, backspace over Document2.htm)
then hit enter.

4. If you see a folder with the name of your document there
(for example Document2_files) double click that folder.

5. In that folder should be a very small JPG file. That's
the background. right click on that graphic and select copy.

6. Open Windows explorer and paste that graphic into a folder
where you keep pictures.

7. Rename the graphic to something meaningful to you :)

8. In Word, remove the Background and go to
Format=>Background=>Fill Effects=>Texture.

(If you do not have Format=>Background in your version of Word
you can use View=>Header/Footer, draw a rectangle the size
of your page then use Format=>Autoshape to get to the
Fill effects dialog [actually this will work in Word 2002
and 2003 as well <g>]

9. Click the 'other texture' button and select the graphic
you saved to disk in the step above and you should now
have a printable background.

Very clever idea, Bob. I'll have to stick that in my mental file somewhere.
I would guess that if you save the document as a Web page you should be able
to access the background directly from the <filename>_files folder?

Hi Suzanne,

Correct, the background is saved as a graphic.
If it's a gradient, for example, it will be a very
small file since Word and Internet Explorer tile it
to fill the screen.
