I can't create a new presentation or add text

I can not open a new document in Power Point and it will not allow me to add
text. The highlighted boxes are there and I can click on it but I can't type
in it
Can someone help me?

Which version of PowerPoint are you using? Make sure that all the updates
have been installed. If you cannot open a new document, how do you know the
place holders are there?
