Good afternoon Davey -

The good news is that under Macintosh OS's before OSX you can adjust the application memory.
Make sure that Excel is closed -
Locate the Excel Icon (not a shortcut) - select it so that it is highlighted.
Go to the File menu - select Get info
In the list - select memory
Change only the PREFERRED memory and set it to a value - try 30720 (Increments of 1024)
Close out of the dialog - Start Excel by double clicking the EXCEL icon - open your file
If you still get the same problem -
Reset the memory again - 40960

If you get to 51200 and still have the problem - you may have to look at some other things.

You may want to try starting EXCEL while holding down the SHIFT key - This will keep Excel from
loading add-ins and files in the Startup folder - then try opening your file.

Please let me know if you need further help or need more information.

Thanks,
Jon Barchenger

THANKS FOR YOUR HELP. I RAISED THE MEMORY TO 51200 AND
STILL COULD NOT OPEN IT. HERE IS SOMETHING INTERESTING.
I PUT THAT FILE IN A SHARED FOLDER AND I OPENED IT FROM
ANOTHER IMAC IN OSX WITH NO PROBLEM. BUT WHEN I TRIED
ANYOTHER IMAC ON THE NETWORK RUNNING IN OS 9 I GET THE SAME
ERROR MESSAGE..."NOT ENOUGH MEMEORY." THE FILE IS 1.9 MB
IN SIZE AND ALL OTHERS ARE ABOUT 244 KB. I DON'T KNOW IF
THAT HAS ANYTHING TO DO WITH IT BUT I THOUGHT IT MIGHT GIVE
YOU A CLUE. PLEASE HELP. THANKS.

Davey,

Make sure virtual memory is ON on that machine. Set it to 1 MB larger than
the machine's actual RAM. (And try not to use all uppercase.)

Davey -
Did you try shift booting excel?

What version of Excel is running on the OS9 machine?
If it is Excel 98 you may have an issue that needs to be resolved a different way.

1. You could try opening on the OSX machine and then save it as a different file name and select the
Microsoft Excel 5/95 workbook. Then see if it will open on your system.
2. You could open it on a machine with Excel 2001 and save it. Then you can open it on your machine.
3. You may try saving it on a Windows version of Excel - like 2000. (If available) Then bring it back to the Mac.
4. If you open it on the OSX machine - then copy all of the information and paste it into a new workbook
then save the file and open this file on the Mac.

Let me know if you need further help or information concerning this issue.

Thanks,

If the file was created using MacXLv.X without the SR-1 update,
you'll get this error in XL98.

The solution is to

a) open it and save using any XL version on any Windows platform.
b) Update XLv.X using at least the 10.1.2 updater found here (10.1.4
and 10.1.5 recommended, but the 10.1.2 has to be done first):

Mactopia Downloads:
http://www.microsoft.com/mac/downloads.aspx

then open the file and do a Save As.
