When I try to insert into my document, a screen comes up that says "file
conversion - IMG_6049" select the encoding that makes your document
readable. __ windows default ___ ms-dos ___ other encoding. Then
the picture is just gobbledy gub.

Using Windows Explorer, right click on the file name and select Properties.

That is your problem. Word wants a .jpg (or other format), not a Paint Shop
Photo Album picture. Can you ask your friend to send you a different format?
