I have Windows XP, when I try to open Excel I get an 'error 1706'

I bought my laptop a few years ago with Windows Xp Professional on it. Just
in the last couple of weeks, when I have tried to open Excel, I can't. When I
try I have a error screen with 'can't find source' or 'search for
PROPLUS.MSI'.

I try searching and nothing appears, I insert the CD-Rom and it still
doesn't work. So I cancel and get a 'Error 1706' click OK then get a 'fatal
error'. I have tried detect and repair, and going to the help site which said
to go to MMC and working around it - which something I did corrected it and
it worked the first time, then I took the CDrom out for a day or two to see
what happened and I'm back to square one and the same procedure doesn't work
again.

What have I done, and what can I do? It's urgent I get into my Excel files
for work.

Having a look here might help
'You receive an \"Error 1706. Setup cannot find the required filesâ€
error message when you repair or install a feature in Office'

One safest thing to 'try' is to do a restore, restore to a date when
the problem didn't occur, you can always revert back to this original
setting.

NOTE:
When reverting back to a earlier restore point you will need to check
your updates as you are reverting back to an earlier time.

PROPLUS.MSI should be in the root folder of your "Office XP Professional
with Front Page" CD, if your Office XP software is legitimate, which it
probably is not (but you probably already know this), because this
edition was only legitimately available to enterprise/volume-license
customers.

Sorry, correction, I have Windows XP Home Edition. When I bought the laptop
the company I bought it from installed it for me before I picked it up. So
where is this root folder on the XP Home Edition stuff?????

It's not on the XP Home Edition stuff, it's on the CD that garfied-n-odie
mentioned. The one you don't have because the company has it, and it's a
volume license edition.

Microsoft Excel is part of Microsoft Office, not Microsoft Windows XP
Home Edition. Did you receive a CD for Microsoft Office?
