I have XP home with SP2 and also I have the disk for Office Pro 2.

why doesnt update recognize the office pro 2002 add on I have? is it because
the system was loaded with XP home first?

Office is not part of the XP Home operating system. Office is a separate
product from Microsoft. If you have an Upgrade Office 2002 program disk you
need to also have a previous qualifying version of Office that the 2002
installation program can find (either preinstalled or the original
installation CD.)
