batch import is the best way but you can also try
insert>picture>new slide show - navigate to the folder with pics and shift
click the ones you want.

This should give you several options. I recently used the VBA code listed
as one of the options to do this to insert about 400 pictures, and it
worked perfectly, but some of the othe solutions might be easier if you
have never worked with VBA.
