ideal image size

What is the ideal graphics size for fast loading, but yet still a nice size
to see. What monitor resolution should a website be made to fit?
Thanks Tom

For what? The question makes no sense without knowing whether the graphic is
a button, a photograph (for what purpose?), a background image, what?

Here's a fairly complete answer:

From your two questions, I fear that you're planning to design web pages
which are made completely out of one giant graphic - so the first thing to
know is that that isn't a good way to design pages.

But if you have to do it that way, I'd suggest a width no bigger than 770
pixels.

Sorry, they will be digital pictures of fishing trips, family and friends. I
will reduce the size of some and make thumbnails....as far as the resolution
I was wondering what is the most common screen resolution, so I can create
the site and most people wouldnt have to scroll to see the entire site.
Sorry for the confusion and thanks for the help...

800 by 600.

Use the free IrfanView to resize resample the images.
www.irfanview.com

Save the images at 75% quality as jpg files and you can get a 1 mb bitmap from the camera
down to a
20 to 30 kb jpg to use on your site.

I'd suggest trying about 150px wide for the thumbnails, and about 500px wide
for the full-size photos.

Both 800 x 600 and 1024 x 768 are very common now. For a fixed-width site, I
would recommend keeping it about 770px wide to avoid people having to scroll
horizontally. It's okay to have to scroll vertically.
