Identifying limiting tasks

Jill

How do I identify which tasks / resources are causing my project to take so
long.
I have entered the tasks
I have scheduled the tasks (dependencies)
I have allocated resource

I would like to find out which dependency/task or resource is the limiting
factor. IE. if I added another software engineer would that reduce the time

Hi Jill,

Welcome to this Microsoft Project newsgroup :)

You need to identify the critical tasks, ie tasks with zero slack ( insert
the Total Slack column). I've covered other ideas in my series on Microsoft
Project in the TechTrax ezine, particularly #28 on minimising delays, at
this site: http://tinyurl.com/2xbhc or this:
http://pubs.logicalexpressions.com/Pub0009/LPMFrame.asp?CMD=ArticleSearch&AUTH=23
(Perhaps you'd care to rate the article before leaving the site, :)
Thanks.)

FAQs, companion products and other useful Project information can be seen at
this web address: <http://www.mvps.org/project/>

Hope this helps - please let us know how you get on :)

Hi Mike
Thanks. I have now identified the tasks with zero slack. How do I work out
what to do with them !!!
I guess I should read your tutorial first

No offense, but the software is only a calculator - it's your skill and
experience as a professional manager that should give you ideas what to do
to impove your schedule. Only you would know that Task X would be shortened
by getting another engineer assigned to the project and there just happens
to be one available, the software really can't help with that.

Thanks - no offence taken!
I am not a project manager or an engineer but I have the task to manage,
learning fast, every little helps
