Identifying repetitive tasks in Resource Usage view

G

Guy

With 7+ identical task structures in a single project list each summarised by
Plot (as in building plot) name, identifying overallocation is problematical.
Have added WBS column to help but would like to include summary name (Plot
name) from Task Entry table. Have tried adding Plot name into Text1 (Task)
manually but can't add that to Res Usage table as it only sees Text1 (Res).
Can task field (custom or other) be added to Resource table or is WBS only
option?

Any ideas would be appreciated that don't involve renaming all tasks to
include plot number in front of Task Name entry. THAT would be a nightmare.

Many Thanks

Hi Guy,
I have a "sort of" answer but there may be a better answer available through
VBA that someone else can suggest.
That being said - here goes my idea.
From the task entry table create a custom WBS. (Project --> WBS --> Define
code.)
In the first row (Level 1) set the sequence to characters (unordered) length
- any
Level 2 set to numbers - ordered
Level 3 set to numbers - ordered
Continue through how ever many levels you need.
Close the dialog box.
Back in the task sheet select the WBS for the summary "Plot" task. Enter
your "Plot text" as the first characters of the WBS. Each subtask of that
summary tasks should automatically inherit the text you typed in as part of
its WBS. Continue setting each summary task to the text you need.
You may need to choose Project --> WBS --> Renumber to get all WBS codes
correctly.

You may then add the WBS field to the Resource Usage view.
Hope this helps. Let us know how you get along.

Thanks very much this is a quick and easy solution. Works and the result
looks very good. Just need to resolve lack of brickies now!

Thanks again

Yuck!

Spoke to soon

JulieS, it worked on this machine which is 2002 and not on another machine
which is 2000. There is no WBS column in Resourse Usage. It has to work on
2000 as that is where the plan is being run from.

Any other ideas

Hi Guy,
Sorry for the delay in replying. You are correct, Project 2000 doesn't have
the WBS field in the Resource Usage view. The only work around I could come
up with is to go ahead and create the custom WBS. Add the WBS field to the
Task Usage view. Then create a custom group (Project--> Group By:--> More
Groups--> New.) Group by Resource Name field in either ascending or
descending order.
Certainly not perfect but may get you close to where you want to be.
Let us know how you get along.
