in powerpoint data entry is slow

When I create a presentation, data entry on each slide pauses after entering
a few letters. You can keep typing and what you've typed will be displayed
after afew seconds. Thbis happens after every few letters. (its like it is
storing what was just entered before displaying the next entry)

Does this happen in other applications, or only in PPT?

Which operating system are you using? Which version of PPT?

xIt also happens in word but the delay is less often.

Okay.

Do you have printer drivers installed? Are they available to the computer?
That is, if you're on a laptop and your printer is a network printer, your
laptop can't "see" it when you're not hooked up to the network. That can
cause odd delays and crashes in PPT (and Word, too, I believe). You'll want
to install printer drivers directly on your computer and set that "printer"
as the default printer -- you don't have to actually have a printer hooked
to the computer, though.

Also, you might try disabling your antivirus program temporarily and see if
that makes a difference. If it does, then you'll want to disable Office
plug-ins and the like which might cause the delays. If you use Norton AV,
you'll want to read Norton Anti-Virus and Office
http://www.rdpslides.com/pptfaq/FAQ00387.htm

If those aren't causing it, I have another idea, but try these first.

Thanks Echo S

Tried both and unfortunately neither worked. Another odd thing, when I try
to accesss the file menu on the tool bar I sometimes also get a delay (like
the machine is saving or searching for something. This doesn't happen with
the other tool bar items. Don't know if this relates or I'm imagining things!

Hopefully your third idea works.

Okay, this is a long shot, but I've seen it fix a couple of odd keystroke
lag issues.

Go to Start|Control Panel|Network Connections. Right-click on local Area
Connection and select Properties. Clear the
check box next to QoS Packet Scheduler.

It's kind of a long shot, but probably worth a try.

You know, you might want to shut down PPT and locate your *.PCB file. That's
the PPT toolbar. Delete it (or rename it) and let PPT create a new toolbar
when you start it next. You could also find all *.PPA files. Those are PPT
add-ins. Rename them to *.OLD and restart PPT. If it works as it should,
then you can close down PPT, rename an *.OLD file back to *.PPA and start
PPT again until you find the add-in that's causing the problem.

Since the delay happens in Word, too, I don't think these are the issues,
but you never know. Do you get the same delay with typing in Notepad?

Unfortunately changing the local area network connection properites didn't
work either. Do you have any other suggestions?

Oh, wait. Yes I do.

Right-click "my computer," left-click on "disconnect network drive," and
disconnect any mapped drives that aren't currently available.

This is garfield-n-odie's favorite trick, and it seems to correct a *lot* of
problems with "the slows." Definitely worth trying.
