Incremental numbering

Is it possible to create a template with a numeric field
that increases by 1 incrementally with each new document
created? If not in excel, maybe in Word or even Access?
The purpose would be to create a purchase order with an
assigned new number for each order

Would also like to add a field to automatically insert
the current date. I know how to do that in Word, but cant
find the same functionality in Excel

If anyone has any ideas, love to hear them, thanks
