Indents

I have a long document I converted from WordPerfect 9 to
Office XP. It looks like this on the references cited
page:
Davis, Justin
1997 CHI-A-WANA Limited......etc.
I want to indent the year 1/2" and then indent the rest
another 1/2". When I put the cursor before the first word
after the year and hit the indent button, or go into
formatting the paragraph, the year also indents. How do I
fix this? Thank you. Sue

It sounds as if you're setting up your document with a hanging indent. In
other words, you want this:

Davis, Justin
1997 CHI-A-WANA Limited......etc.

But Word can have only one hanging indent in a paragraph. For the portion
after the year, you need to set a tab stop and insert a tab character. This
assumes that you're using a line break after the name, so that the entire
reference is in a single paragraph. You will probably want to add some Space
Before/After to this paragraph and save the formatting as a style.

If, however, the line that begins with the date is likely to run over to
another line, which you want indented 1", then you need another hanging
indent, and so you will have to use separate paragraphs (and styles). Format
the first one with Space Before or the second with Space After, and apply
the "Keep with next" property to the first one. You can make them alternate
automatically by specifying each one as the "Style for following paragraph"
of the other.
