insert space between cells

I've created a table and want to seperate the border underlining the column
headings. How can I insert a space without having to insert a column for
this purpose?

You can adjust the depth of the row by dragging the border downwards. Does
your table have ruling? You can also adjust the alignment of the titles so
they are centred in the cells. See the tables and borders toobar. Does this
help?

Found what I needed; highlight the row of headers in the word table > right
click to Borders and Shading, in Preview place line where you want it to
appear and below that choose from APPLY TO - in this instance it is Paragraph
Borders.

Thanks for you help anyway
