inserted columns propagating across views

Hi - I have most recently used 98, not using 2003. When I create a new or
copied view and insert or hide columns, the changes are propagated across
views. I asked someone else using project in the shop and they are not having
the problem. I created many custom views in 98 and never had this problem.

Pat,
Your message says you previously used Project 98 and are NOT using
[Project] 2003. May I assume you meant to say that you are NOW using
Project 2003? If not, what version are you using?

What exactly do you mean when you say the changes are propagated across
views? Are you using Project Guide?

Hi Pat,

As far as I know, there is no difference between creating views in
Project 2003 and previous versions.

What you report may be caused by changing the tables that are used in
several different views. For example, I create a new view, based upon
the Gantt chart view. If I copy the Gantt chart view, the default view
applied to the Gantt chart is the Entry table. So, unless I choose
otherwise when creating the view, I most likely end up using the Entry
table as the table in the view. Later on, I return to the "standard"
Gantt chart view and add a new column (field) to the Entry table in that
view. If I return to my custom view, the new column I added to the
Entry table in the Gantt chart view appears. The change is not
propagating from view to view -- the same table was used in both view
definitions.

If you want to have better control over the custom views, create custom
tables and set them as part of your custom views.

I hope this helps. Let us know how you get along.

Hi - I never created new tables (that I know of) when using 98. I will try
what you said here and create a new table. I won't know until tomorrow but
thanks in advance!

Your welcome Pat and thanks for the feedback. It's possible when you
created the new views earlier you changed the tables to tables that were
not as frequently used.

I hope this helps. Let us know how you get along.

Julie,

I think you have described what I have been asked to do. Multiple people
share a single MS Project 2002 file. Each person wants to see different
columns when they use the plan. I created a new view from the Gantt Chart
view (e.g. AndyView), but columns I added when in AndyView also showed up
when I returned to the standard Gantt Chart view. I then copied table Entry
to AndyEntry and associated AndyView with AndyEntry. Then, when I added
columns to AndyView, they did not display when I returned to the standard
Gantt Chart view. That's what I wanted, but I want to make sure of
something... Have I created new data tables? When I added a task while in
AndyView, I did see that task when I returned to the standard Gantt view. So
the two views (Gantt and AndyView), with their two tables (Entry and
AndyEntry) are still populating and using the same data tables, right?

Hi Andy,

When you created the AndyEntry table, you merely created a new table to
*display* data in Project. Each task (and resource) in Project has a
number of pieces of data (called fields). When you create a table, you
are selecting what fields you wish to see -- all of the other fields
still exist, they are just not currently displayed.

So, as you add a task in the AndyEntry table which is part of the
AndyView, you are adding that task to the project file. It will still
appear in other task views.

I hope this helps. Let us know how you get along.
