Inserting a New Sentence

When I want to add a sentence to clarify a thought, I move my cursor back up
to that place and start typing. Unfortunately it then deletes text that
comes afterward. Why does it do this, and how can I make it stop?

You've toggled from Insert mode to Overtype. Either press the Insert button
or double-click OVR on the Word status bar to reverse this.
