Inserting multiple pictures in Word

E

Everitt Beers

I want to insert multiple pictures in Word in one
operation. How do I do it?

When I try to drag and drop multiple JPEG images from an
Explorer window, only links are inserted into Word.

On the other hand, when I insert pictures using the Insert
menu, it only allows one picture at a time to be inserted.

I am working on multiple newsletters, and therefore, it
would be a great help if I could just drag and drop 20 or
so pictures into a Word document all at once.

Thanks for any ideas.

If you set the picture insert method to in-line any pictures you drag and
drop will be inserted one after the other.
Frankly I can't see how useful this would be in the preparation of a
newsletter.

Graham -

This would be very helpful to me. I don't produce newsletters, but as part of my job, I go out in the field and document, for example: 1) work at a construction site, 2) servicing operations at a grease trap, 3) condition of new sidewalks following a rain, 4) participants at a meeting and places we visited. For fun, I often create word documents with a dozen or more photos show 1) birds observed that day, 2) things or views observed during a hike, 3) recent photos included in a letter to my father.

Could you please explain more about setting "the picture insert method to in-line"? I'm a fairly experienced Word user, but I don't understand what you're getting at there. I'd really appreciate it. Thanks.

Recent versions of Word allow you to set the default insertion method -
tools > options > edit - set to in-line with text. With an older version, if
you insert a picture, check its properties > layout and if in-line then OK.
If not a registry change is required.

Graham -

Thankyou. I guess I don't understand Word as well as I thought - my software was already set as you suggested to "in-line with text" but I still can't figure out how to quickly insert photos into a word document (either quickly insert one photo at a time, or insert several photos at once).

I do appreciate your courtesy in replying.

This is my third attempt at a reply - I'm not sure I've figured out how to "post" correctly yet.

I will try posting a general question about quickly inserting photos. Thanks.

Open Word.
Open Windows Explorer
Select the folder that contains the images.
Select the images you wish to insert.
Drag the images to the Word page and drop them there. They will be inserted
one after the other.

The problem I have is that I am inserting several pictures
into a report, needless to say for each picture I have to
go through several steps. Insert..Picture...File, and then
select the picture. These steps have to be done for each
picture which is very time consuming. I am selecting the
pictures from a compact flash card and the option of
selecting the first picture and holding down the shift key
while going down several pictures does not work, it just
goes to the last picture I select.

Thanks

Your compact flash card should behave just like a small hard drive. You
should be able to select multiple entries using Windows Explorer.

Hi Inspector1,

What version of Word and Windows are you using?

If your default graphics wrapping is set to be either
in front of text or behind text then when you bring in
a group of pictures with one go Word stacks them on
top of each other. If that's the case you'd then need
to peel them off of the file by dragging.
