INSERTING PHOTOS / FILE SIZE FOR E-MAIL

Why is it that a blank word page is about 25Kb..then I add
in (insert) a 550Kb photo... do some dialog and the file
becomes a 17 or 18M file... too large to e-mail...how can
I insert a photo on a page, add some dialog without the
file becoming so large?????
