Inserting Picture/Graphic

C

Christine

I understand how to insert a picture or graphic. However, sometimes when I
do it, all that appears on the page is an empty box with the six small circle
"handles" appearing---no picture or graphic. I'm using Publisher 2003 on
Windowx XP. It does not happen every single time, but occasionally. When it
does, I have restarted the computer, which does not help. I have opened up a
new blank document which does not help. Usually I just give up, do something
else, and when I come back to it, hours later, it works. Any solutions?
Thank you in advance.

What happens if you print the document to the Microsoft Office Document
Image Writer when such an empty picture appears?

View, pictures, detailed display. If this isn't the solution, think about updating
your video driver.
Does the image print? Can you see it in print preview? If the resolution is high,
there are times Publisher will balk.

What's the file size of the image?
What's the image file extension?...jpg, tiff, etc.?

Its just clip art in when I insert the picture nothing appears but a empty
box outlined in small circles. I just got a new dell and it came with
office 2003 professional. I am thinking its a software issue. I have
uninstalled and reinstalled it several times and the same problem. My former
computer had XP and so does my computer now. I don't know what the problem
is. I am waiting on a response from microsoft for a fix. I will share as
soon as it is fixed.

Small circles sounds like wordart stuff.
What happens when you try to insert a *small* (file size) jpg image?

It very well could be your video driver, even though your Dell is new, it doesn't
necessarily mean the drivers are up to date.
Try turning down the acceleration on your adapter, control panel, display, settings
tab, advanced button, troubleshoot tab.
It this allows your viewing your images, then it is the video driver.

Christine,

I broke down and paid the $35 microsoft fee and got an answer to why it does
that and how to fix it.

Right click on desktop
left Click Properties
click on settings tap
Click advanced tab
Click on Trpubleshoot
Check Hardware accelerationa and make sure its set to low

The microsoft guy told me its a common problem with publisher and all the
newer computers hardware settings are set to high.

Hope this helps!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

All computer hardware settings are set to high by default, as that's where
it should be (lower causes problems) - it's just that setting it lower
allows you to work around problems caused by poor-quality video drivers that
are becoming more common on new machines.

The easiest way to fix the problem if it is sorted by lowering the hardware
acceleration is to get better video drivers - for many cards, the issue is
fixed simply by updating to the latest video drivers available at the
manufacturer's website. For others, you have to bug the manufacturer to
release an update.
