Install SP1 on Office XP trial fails

I have the 30 day trial of Office XP and I need to install SP1 on i
to allow me to install another Microsoft product

When I try to install SP1 I get the message
The expected version of the product was not found on your syste

Is this because it is the trial version of Office XP and you cannot instal
service packs on top of trial versions ?
